5 Warning Signs Your Water Tank Needs Immediate Cleaning

Kartik Cleaning Services · Water Tank Hygiene Guide

Most households only think about their overhead tank or underground sump when something visibly goes wrong — by which point mud, algae, and bacteria have usually been building up for months. Water tanks are typically cleaned once a year at most, and often less, simply because they're out of sight.

Here are five signs that mean your tank needs attention now, not at the next scheduled clean.

1. Cloudy or discoloured water

If water from the tap looks slightly brown, yellow, or hazy — even after running it for a minute — it usually means sediment, rust, or algae has built up at the bottom of the tank and is being disturbed into the supply.

2. A musty or earthy smell

Water that smells faintly of soil, mould, or dampness even when it looks clear is a strong sign of algae or bacterial growth on the tank walls, especially common after monsoon season.

3. Visible sediment when the tank is opened

If you can see a layer of mud, silt, or dark residue when you open the tank lid, that sediment doesn't stay put — it circulates into your water supply every time the tank is disturbed or refilled.

4. A metallic or chemical taste

This can point to corrosion inside an older tank, or mineral buildup reacting with standing water. Either way, it's worth a full inspection and clean rather than waiting it out.

5. It's been more than 6–12 months

Even without obvious symptoms, tanks that haven't been cleaned in six months to a year almost always have some level of sediment and biofilm buildup — the absence of a bad smell doesn't mean the water is clean.

Why this matters more in Delhi NCR

Hard water and heavy monsoon runoff mean tanks in this region accumulate mineral scale and organic sediment faster than in many other parts of the country. A tank that would be fine on a 12-month cycle elsewhere may need attention every 6–8 months here — particularly overhead Sintex tanks exposed to direct sun and heat, which encourages algae growth.
