Sofa Stains 101: What Professional Cleaners Do Differently
A spill happens, and the instinct is to grab a wet cloth and scrub. It's understandable — but scrubbing a fresh stain is one of the most common ways people accidentally make it worse, spreading the stain deeper into the cushion foam instead of lifting it out.
Why scrubbing usually backfires
Fabric upholstery is woven, and vigorous scrubbing pushes liquid and residue further into the weave and down into the foam padding underneath. Once a stain reaches the foam, it becomes much harder to remove — and can start to smell or discolour over time even if the surface fabric looks clean again.
What actually works: injection-extraction
Professional upholstery cleaning uses a method called injection-extraction. It works in three stages:
- Dry vacuuming first — loose dust, crumbs and surface debris are removed before any liquid touches the fabric, so nothing gets pushed deeper.
- Targeted foam or shampoo application — a fabric-safe cleaning solution is worked into the stained area specifically, not the whole sofa, to break down the stain without oversaturating the material.
- High-power extraction — a machine pulls the moisture and dissolved stain back out immediately, rather than letting it sit and soak in. This is the step a wet cloth simply can't replicate.
Common stains and what they need
- Oil and grease (common on sofas near dining areas) — needs a degreasing agent, since water alone won't break down oil.
- Tea, coffee and turmeric — these are tannin-based stains that darken and set with heat, so hot water should be avoided; cool water and the right pH-balanced solution work better.
- Ink and dye transfer — often needs a solvent-based spot treatment rather than a water-based one, and is one of the trickier stains to fully lift.
- General everyday grime — usually responds well to a full shampoo wash rather than spot treatment alone, since it's spread evenly rather than concentrated.
A quick rule of thumb
If a stain is fresh, blot — never rub — with a dry or barely damp cloth to lift what you can, and avoid any cleaning product until you know what it's safe for your fabric type. For anything more than a day old, or on fabric you're unsure about, it's usually safer to leave it to a proper deep clean rather than risk setting the stain further.
