How Often Should You Deep Clean Your Home in Delhi's Climate?

Most cleaning guides written for cooler, drier climates suggest a deep clean every three to six months. In Delhi and the wider NCR, that timeline doesn't hold up — the combination of dust storms, high pollution (PM2.5) levels, humidity swings between seasons, and construction dust from a fast-growing city means dirt and allergens build up far faster indoors than most people realise.

Here's a more realistic breakdown of what your home actually needs, room by room and season by season.

Why Delhi homes get dirty faster

Three local factors make the biggest difference compared to other cities:

• Airborne dust and pollution — Delhi's air quality means fine particulate matter settles on every surface, including inside sealed rooms, within days of a clean.
• Seasonal humidity — the monsoon months bring dampness that encourages mould in bathrooms, kitchen exhausts, and fabric surfaces like sofas and mattresses.
• Hard water — much of Delhi NCR has hard water, which leaves mineral deposits on taps, tiles, and glass far quicker than in low-hardness-water cities.

A realistic deep-cleaning schedule

Every 3–4 months: Full home deep clean — kitchen degreasing, floor scrubbing, bathroom descaling, and dusting of ceilings, fans and window tracks. If you're near a construction site or a main road, lean toward the 3-month end.

Every 4–6 months: Sofa and carpet deep cleaning. Fabric surfaces trap dust and allergens even with regular vacuuming — a proper shampoo wash lifts what a vacuum can't reach.

Every 6 months: Mattress sanitisation. Sweat, dead skin and dust mites accumulate steadily, and this is one of the most overlooked areas in a home.

Before and after monsoon: Water tank cleaning. Monsoon runoff and humidity are when sediment and bacteria build up fastest in overhead tanks and sumps.

Once a year, ideally before monsoon: Roof waterproofing check — even a small crack that seemed fine in the dry months can let in significant seepage once the rains start.

Signs you shouldn't wait for the schedule

• Visible dust film returning to furniture within a day or two of wiping
• A musty smell in the bathroom or kitchen that cleaning products don't fully remove
• Family members sneezing more at home than outside
• Discoloured or cloudy water from the tap
